Today I happened to find; and then create the ultimate DIY shower cleaner for my poor, pitiful shower door that had permanent (or so I thought) damage.
I was SO impressed with this cleaner as I experienced very little scrubbing, and even cleaned the grout and faucet with little effort. As you can see for yourself, it's basically spotless.
I am all for any time saving, less toxic cleaning but when I can kill two birds with one stone ---- I am sold!
What you'll need:
1/2 c. Dawn Dishsoap
10 drops of Lemon or Cleansing Blend essential oil
Contact me for exclusive access to the essential oils I use
I started with an old spray bottle I had in the cleaning cabinet -- the cleaner that came in the bottle never impressed me and hadn't been used in ages. I did however, liked the way the sprayer worked -- I feel like a good sprayer is important for this project.
I dropped 10 drops of oil in the empty spray bottle.
I then microwaved 1/2 c. white vinegar for 1 minute and it was lightly boiling. (You do want the vinegar hot but I would not microwave for more than one minute)
Despite my efforts to substitute Castile soap for Dawn dish soap, it didn't work out. Stick with Dawn.
Once the vinegar is hot add 1/2 c. dawn dish soap to the hot vinegar. (I mixed the two together while it was still in the glass measuring dish). The castile soap did not mix with the vinegar, instead it clumped up in the measuring bowl despite any efforts to get the two to combine. This is why I would stick to Dawn. (Tip: Stay away from Dawn antibacterial. You will be fine with the regular dawn dish soap - you don't need the ones with super powers. Super power cleaners = more toxic chemicals).
Once you have 1 C. of mixed hot vinegar with Dawn dish soap pour your mixture carefully into the spray bottle. (Tip: Funnels are helpful for this part).
Once the vinegar, dishsoap, and oil are in the bottle, shake it up just a little bit.
Because the mixture is hot, you may need to unscrew the cap every once in a while so that it's not under pressure.
Spray this ALL OVER your shower.
This mixture sticks to the grime and hard water.
I let the mixture sit for 20 minutes but I don't see why you couldn't spray it in the morning and scrub after work.
Because of the design of our shower I used a bucket of hot water, a sponge and a bristled brush to clean every nook and cranny of the shower (including grout).
I had the entire shower sparkling new in about 10 minutes.
NO CHEMICALS.
Please feel free to share this recipe so we can reduce toxicity in every home!I would love to see your before and after pictures in the comments section of this post.
